CANNABIS. IT'S AS LEGAL AS YOU MAKE IT

The police's view towards Cannabis has certainly changed over the years. There may well have been a
time when one could be busted for just the roach of a joint, but such an event is unlikely nowadays

The smoking of Cannabis is not only restricted to 'young alternative type people' but to all sectors of
today's multicultural society. This makes the use of Cannabis fairly common place and nothing to get
too exited about within many groups of people. The smoking of Cannabis at festivals, street parties
and such like is so prolific that the police are often forced to turn a blind eye to it. This however, is not
always the case and thousands of people are still being busted for using a herb that could actually be
improving their health.

'

In must situations, if you are stopped by the police and found to be in the possession of a small
amount of Cannabis (A couple of ounces or less, as long as it's in one lump) it is most likely to be
confiscated and you will receive a verbal caution. No record of these verbal cautions are made. I've
also heard of plenty of cases where the police have allowed people to keep hold of their Cannabis.

I have been stopped only once and found to be in the possession of Cannabis. This was in July '95
and was for a tiny piece of hash. At the time I was given a verbal caution which I accepted. I now
realise however, by accepting that caution I was allowing the system to function. By accepting a
caution you are admitting guilt. How many Cannabis users think they are doing something wrong.
None I would assume. Yet thousands of people accept cautions and allow the system to work. I have
leant a lot since July '95 and there is no way I would now accept a caution for breaking a law that is *
fundamentally based on lies.

In August of this year I began to circulate flyer's that explained the origins of prohibition and how the
laws of prohibition only function with our cooperation. The last part of the
flyer talked about 'National
Turn Yourself In Day'. The actual plan for the day changed quite a few times. By the time of the
CHIC Cannabis Conference on September 14th I announced my intentions of opening a 'Free Medical
Marijuana Distribution
Centre'. The plan was to distribute free Cannabis to people who use it to
alleviate the symptoms of illnesses that would otherwise be treated by potentially harmful synthetic
medicines. The idea was to draw attention to the fact that Cannabis is listed as a Schedule 1 Drug - a '
drug placed in Schedule 1 is deemed to have no
recognised medical value and cannot be prescribed by
a doctor. The only way someone can use Cannabis medically, is to break the law.

The only problem was were to do it. The Wandsworth Eco-Village was suggested but due to

objections by a number of people who lived there I decided to do it in Hyde Park instead

A hundred or so people gathered around at Speakers Comer as the cakes were handed out on an
exceptionally bright sunny day. After the deed was done and with only one cake remaining as
evidence, we made our way to Marylebone police station, where I had already made an appointment for us to be

arrested on

Cannabis related charges. After a short delay of us being locked out of the station I was allowed in on my own.

I explained what I had done to the smiling sergeant behind the desk. who replied something along the
lines of "Okay you've proved your point, would you like to leave now please".

Okay, so what have I proved ? The only way people can use Cannabis is illegally, but if you do this

publicly, in Hyde Park for example, the police don't seem to bothered, and will not arrest you.

It is now my intention to start growing Cannabis, which I will then distribute to people who are
presently using Cannabis to alleviate symptoms of illnesses that many modem synthetic medicines
I have failed to remedy.

Hopefully in the future Free Medical Marijuana Centres will be set up where Cannabis will be grown
and distributed to patients in need of the herb. But then again we may reach a time when governments
start protecting the welfare of the people rather than the vested interests of the pharmaceutical
companies. Until that time comes however it is down to us to do something about it.

Cannabis won't legalise itself and it certainly won't save the planet
unless you do something about it.
