So what’s been happening with CHIC ?

Hi my names Free Rob Cannabis and in the summer of ’95 I formed the Cannabis Hemp Information Club (CHIC) with the aim of raising people’s awareness about the history and planet saving potential of Cannabis.

In September 1995 CHIC organised a Cannabis conference in London, and in April 1996 the CHIC Cannabis Museum and Information centre was opened by former Cannabis smuggler Howard Marks.

On September 28th 1996, Howard and I distributed free Cannabis from Hyde Park speakers corner before offering ourselves for arrest at the local police station as part of a National Turn Yourself in day (NTYD). The police refused to arrest anyone at these events. It was soon after this event that the third issue of Cannabis UK came out.

It was round this time that I left London for Glastonbury, closing the CHIC Cannabis Museum and Information Centre, and opened a Hemp Shop called ‘In Harmony With Nature’, on the Spring Equinox ’97.

As the police refused to arrest anyone at the NTYD, it was decided to launch the Free Medical Marijuana Foundation, with the aim of supplying Cannabis to medicinal users. The FMMF was launched on May 23rd 1997 outside the Department of Health.

On September 28th 1997 a second NTYD was held, and again the police refused to arrest anyone.

Despite the police’s refusal to arrest me at the NTYD, I was arrested for 1.57 grammas of herbal Cannabis and fined £140 on my 30th birthday. I refused to pay the fine and ended being sent to prison, during which time over £1,000 was raised for the FMMF as part of a sponsored prison sentence. While in prison I wrote to home secretary Jack Straw, and invited him to a one-to-one TV debate on the subject. As no answer was received I went to the home office and attempted to hand in another invitation with a live Cannabis plant. I was arrested outside the Home Office and ended up in Southwark Crown court in August 1998 where I issued the Crown with a 'Counter Plaint' charging them with Malicious Prosecution, Crimes Against Humanity, Crimes against Peace, Tyranny, Malfeasance, Fraud, Perjury, Malindoctination and Conspiracy. The judge however made every effort to prevent me from presenting evidence against the crown and then blatantly directed the jury to find me guilty, which they eventually did. I was fined and again refused to pay it, but rather then being sent to prison I was held in police custody for 6 hours.

Less than two weeks after this case I was arrested for Cannabis plants growing outside ‘In Harmony With Nature’. These plants were part of a display, which was awarded a first prize in the Glastonbury in Bloom competition. Although I was again found guilty at trial, I was given no fine or costs for this case.

Less than a month after this case I was again arrested for plants growing outside my shop. This was followed by a raid on my house and being charged with possession and intent to supply Cannabis, cultivation of Cannabis, possession of LSD (Acid), MDMA (Ecstasy), DMT and Magic Mushrooms. Again I was found guilty and was ordered to do 180 hours community service and pay £1,000 costs. I refused to pay the costs and did a week long sponsored prison sentence raising over £1,000 for the FMMF.

My latest arrest happened on September 29th 2001 at Hyde Park, Speakers Corner, when I held a public Cannabis auction and raffle, which aimed to raise funds for the FMMF. The 5th Trial of the ‘The Queen v Free Cannabis’ started on Armistice Day 2002. During the trial I explained the history of Cannabis, what led to it’s illegal prohibition and how the law violates Human Rights.

During the Judges summing up he informed the jury that they had the power, but not the right to return a ‘Not Guilty’ verdict. Returning a ‘Non Guilty’ verdict would be termed a perverse verdict.

The jury retired, and after 3 hours of deliberation a majority verdict had not been reached and so the Judge pronounced a hung jury. Despite walking free from court, he was called back for a farcical re-trail in February 2003. The judge refused to allow witnesses to be called, ruled over 100 years of independent scientific research and study as inadmissible heresy and then blatantly directed the jury to find me guilty, which they duly did. I was then sentenced to 2 months imprisonment at HMP Bellmarsh.

Although a Free Cannabis giveaway was held at speakers corner in late September 2002, the event was not held in 2003, but I returned to Hyde Park in September 2004, giving away Free Cannabis and then handing in a live Cannabis plant to Police at Marylebone police station.

As you can see it has been 8 years since the last issue of Cannabis UK came out. The main reason for this has been that I have been trying to run too many things practically on my own. In 1998 I said that unless volunteers came forward to help with the running of CHIC, it would no longer run as an active organisation.

As volunteers did not come forward to help, CHIC has been pretty dormant as an organisation. Frustrated at the situation with CHIC, I tried launching a Glastonbury based Cannabis campaign organisation, Cannabis In Avalon (CIA) in 1999. Though CIA organised a CID in THC (Cannabis Information Day in The Heart Chakra) in May 2000, and several ‘Hemp Nights’ since then, it’s still been mainly me organising things. This has meant that CIA has not been that high profile.

The biggest focus of my life over the last eight years has been ‘In Harmony With Nature’. The original idea for the shop was someone else’s who said there was a team of people to run the shop and I would not have to invest any of my money into it. Well as it turned out there wasn’t a team of people to run it and it has absorbed nearly all of my life savings. Running a business has been one of the most stressful things in my life, especially as I feel that it has distracted me away from true calling as a Cannabis activist.

I have come to realise that by running ‘In Harmony With Nature’, I have been living someone else’s dream, a dream I know realise could well have been influenced by cocaine. I have not truly been following my heart, and living in the Heart Chakra of mother earth I am firing it increasingly difficult to continue.

I have had enough of running ‘In Harmony With Nature’. Not only have I been following someone else’s dream, I have had enough of being ripped off by cocaine snorting ‘Hemp Businessmen’, being burgled 7 times as well as having loads of stock shoplifted. I can’t take it any more, it’s doing me in and I want to enjoy life more.
