The Planets most Valuable and Versatile natural Resource

SOWING THE SEED

Cannabis is a tall, erect, annual herbaceous plant which is usually
grown from seed in a wide variety of soil conditions and climates.

For Fibre Crops the seeds are densely planted, ensuring the growth of tall slender stalks with little foliage. Plants gown for seeds or medicine are widely spaced allowing for the maximum development of foliage and seed baring flowers.

Because Cannabis grows so rapidly and has few natural predators there is no need for the use of herbicides or pesticides making it an ideal organic crop.

To grow Cannabis in the UK it is first necessary to get a licence from the Home Office.
Farmers of Cannabis can also apply for an FJRC subsidy (£264/acre in 1995).

HARVESTING

In Britain crops gown in early spring will have usually reached a height
of between 2-3m by late autumn when they are harvested. The cut stalks are left to 'ret' in
the fields. This process loosens the outer 'bast fibres' from the woody inner 'Hurds'

PROCESSING

After' retting' the outer cortex of 'bast fibres' are separated from
the woody inner 'herds' by a process called 'decortication'. This is normally done
using a decorticating machine, but can also be be done using traditional 'hand brakes' to
break the stalks, followed by (Heckling' and ' C o m b i n g' to separate the fibres.

BAST FIBER

The Cannabis plant produces the strongest, most durable, long lasting
natural fibres in the plant kingdom. These fibres can be spun into twine, rope and various
types of cordage as well as being woven into cloth and very fine quality papers.

HURDS

The woody inner' hards 'have a high cellulose content making them useful
for numerous industrial applications. They can be pulped to make paper, compressed to
make fibre board, mixed with water and lime to make a building material or used loose as
an insulating material as well as horse bedding (as used by the Royal Household).
Extracted cellulose can be used as vegetable feed stock to make non-toxic plastic goods.

THE SEED OF LIFE

The seed of the Cannabis plant is one of natures most
perfectly balanced food sources. It contains easily digestible proteins and has the highest
level of essential fatty acids in the plant kingdom. EFAs are a vital key to maintaining
healthy life and have been found to help prevent degenerative diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis by boosting the immune system.

Seed oil also has many industrial applications including bio-diesel fuel, lamp and
lubricating oil, as well as being a base for non-toxic, cruelty-free paints and cosmetics.

MEDICINE

The flowering tops of predominately the female plant plant produce
resins that have numerous therapeutic applications for the treatment of various illnesses
including Glaucoma, Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Pain and Stress.

Unfortunately during the 1970's pharmaceutical companies lobbied governments into passing laws that prohibited the use of natural herbal Cannabis. Under British Law Cannabis is listed as a schedule 1 drug, which means it is deemed to have no recognised medical value and cannot be prescribed by a doctor. Synthetic copies of Cannabis, as produced by the Pharmaceutical companies, are deemed to have medical value, and can be prescribed by a doctor. In the interests of humanity, this law must change.

FUEL

Because Cannabis grows so rapidly, up to 4 times a year in some climates, it is one of the highest yielders of 'Biomass', which can be converted through pyrolysis into solid, liquid and gas fuels. The main by-product of combustion is carbon dioxide which is absorbed by newly growing crops and converted into oxygen, making for a perfect 'eco-friendly' fuel.

CANNABIS: THE NATURAL ANSWER

Using Cannabis for paper, clothing, fuels and various other products could help save the Rain Forests and reverse the effects of Global Warming.
