This years (1996) Cannabis Hemp
conference was held at the Parkway Cinema Camden, a large single screen
cinema, which has been squatted twice within the last year or so. The venue was
only chosen at a fortnights
notice due to the constant threat of eviction, which eventually happened two
days after the conference.
The conference started with the old
wartime classic 'Hemp for Victory' followed by the excellent 'Hemp
Revolution' (At last this film has a UK disributor and will be available in
most major outlests by early '97)
The first session of talks was kicked
off by the Campaign to Legalise Cannabis International Association who are
planning to put forward candidates for the next General Election.
Warren from New Zealand NORML
(National Organisation to Reform Marijuana Laws) then talked about his
experiences using direct action in New Zealand. Warren helped organise a 'Turn
Yourself In Day' in New
Zealand and was a big inspiration to me in organising a similar event in
Britain.
Warren was followed 6y the Rev Robin Scott of the Medical Marijuana Foundation.
Session two talks were started by
Richard Rudgely, an anthropologist at the Institute of Social and Cultural
Anthropology, Oxford University, who talked about the history of Cannabis use.
Richard was followed by Wemard of
Posirronics, Amsterdam,, who talked mainly about the cultivation of Cannabis
and the Sensimelia Fan club which he runs. It was during Wemards talk that the
main problem of the days
proceedings came to the for , aicoho! This years conference had a very open
door policy which brought in its
fair share of drunks. At several points dunng Wemard's talk me microphone was
grabbed from him by a rather
persistent pisshead, who when offered the opportunity of speaking couldn't
string more than two sentences
together, such was his state of intoxication
The final session of speakers included
former international Cannabis smuggler Howard Marks, jailed author Mick
Mariow and myself Rob Christopher. Howard conducted a question and answer
session while Mick, who had
only come out of prison the day before the conference talked about his MARCUS
(Medical and Recreational
Users Symposium) document, Cannabis: Burying the Myths - Resurrecting the
Reality.
After a few awards ceremonies the
event climaxed with a Hemp Fashion Show, which included me unscheduled
addition of one of the Camden Brew Crew who insisted on standing in the middle
of the stage during the entire
performance - well you got to laugh I suppose.
All in all, it was another successful conference, spoiled only by the
persistent interruptions by some sad
individuals loosing their control on government controlled piss.
Yet again the organisation for this event,
just like last years was done pretty much by just one person, me. Please, I
really could do with some help on next years event which will most probably be
taking place on September 15 th
1997. Do you know of a suitable venue, seating up to 300 people ? Tickets will
be sold in advance and there will
be a 'NO ALCOHOL' policy on the door. Venues tolerating the use of Cannabis
would be preferential.
Special Thanks To all the Speakers,
Rick for the PA, Rob for the Video Projection, Stan, George and Jammie for
videoing the event, Abe and Mandy for the Cannabis Food, Eco-Trip for the
catering, Essie and all the 'Hemp
Fashion Models', Lee, Warren, Scan, Josie, The Parkway Posse and anyone else
who helped out,
I would also like to thaank those who
supported the event by attending, especially the officers of the Metropolitan
police forward intelligence unit. Thanks for showing such interest. I hope you
learned something.
....in 1989 the British Medical Association published a report on alcohol and violence. The report showed that
alcohol was implicated in 60-70 % of homicides, 75% ofstabbmgs and 50% of domestic assault.
........In December '95 the government raised the recommended limits of weekly alcohol consumption by 33 %.
ANNUAL DEATH TOLL DIE TO DRUG USE : ALCOHOL 25,000 TOBACCO 100,000 CANNABIS 0
PLEASE RESPECT THIS ENVIRONMENT AND REFRAIN FROM THE USE OF GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED DRUGS
STOP PRESS : Paul Flynn MP has tabled a new Early
Day Motion (No. 158)
calling for the legalisation of Cannabis for medical use. Only 12 MPs have
signed so far. Please, Please. Please ask your MP to support this motion.
THE 'HEMP REVOLUTION* TOUR. One of the most informative and
objective films ever made
about Cannabis,' The Hemp Revolution' will soon be available in the UK. CHIC has
been asked to help in the
promotion of this film and is therfore planning to organise public viewings of
the film. Do you know of a venue for
a suitable public screening? CHIC are very keen to organise a tour of
Universities and Collages.
